[NEWS/111028] New York Daily News lists top 5 must-hear K-pop groups

MANILA, Philippines – With the holding of the first K-pop concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City recently, American newspaper New York Daily News ran a story on K-pop.

“Since the turn of the millennium South Korea has been pumping out dramas and music videos as a means of influencing the broader culture throughout Asia. South Korean president Lee Myung-bak ranked K-Pop as one of the country’s greatest achievements in an August speech celebrating Korea’s independence from Japan,” the widely circulated newspaper said.

NY Daily News picked the top 5 K-pop groups that “will help immerse you in the world of K-pop.”

They are 2NE1, Big Bang, Super Junior, TVXQ and 2PM.

NY Daily News said noted 2NE1 for their “anthems on girl power and boy bashing” and fashion sense
.
“Unlike other Korean girl groups who capitalize on sex appeal or being saccharine and cutesy, this group rose to the top of the charts for their anthems on girl power and boy bashing,” it said.

The newspaper said 2NE1’s “fierce” fashion, wearing clothes by “Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Jeremy Scott, who has become one of the band’s biggest supporters.”

As for Big Bang, 2NE1’s big brothers at YG Entertainment, NY Daily News said the boy band “has since become one of Asia’s most recognizable acts.”

“It seems like Asia’s not the only place they’re receiving attention,” it said.

On the other hand, Super Junior was described as “one of South Korea’s biggest ‘hallyu’ groups.”

NY Daily News said, “How do you get attention from tween girls everywhere? Stick as many good-looking guys as possible on a stage. The 12-member Super Junior has already been deemed one of South Korea’s biggest ‘hallyu’ groups by the BBC and they have a far reach of fans from Slovenia to Peru, where they were named one of the 30 ‘Sexiest Men in the World.’”

Boy band 2PM was described by the newspaper as “Chippendale-like” because of their six-pack abs that the group displays during performances and acrobatics.

“While other boy bands captured attention through their pretty-boy images, this group capitalizes on their masculine look,” NY Daily News said of boy band 2PM.

It added, “The six-member group focuses on heavy acrobatics and intricate dance moves and has become almost Chippendale-like — without the cheesy bow ties.”

Duo TVXQ was noted for choreography and voices.

“With tight choreography and impressive pipes, this dynamic duo has become the epitome of K-Pop: slick dance moves, stellar musical productions and big voices to boot,” NY Daily News said.

[NEWS/111026] Donghae and Seohyun snap a photo together on stage

On October 26th, Super Junior‘s Donghae revealed a selca he took with SNSD‘s Seohyun from the stage of their ‘SM Town Live in New York‘ concert in Manhattan.

    Donghae tweeted, “With my ‘UNICEF Envoy couple’ Seohyun in New York. Thank you for giving us so much of your love. hope C U again NYC ^^ Everybody have a goodday!!”

    The two look like close siblings pulling in for an affectionate pose against a festive backdrop of congratulatory confetti. The filtering of the photo adds a dream-like feel to the atmosphere on stage.

    Fans commented, “Truly looking like siblings”, “Good job to the both of you !”, “Gorgeous people”, and“Bravely taking a picture on stage!”

[NEWS/111025] Seohyun and Kyuhyun look like a couple

Pictures of SNSD’s Seohyun and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun were recently released.

    On the 25th, SM Entertainment posted pictures, which were taken during the ’2011 SM Town Live in New York’ concert on the 23rd, on their official facebook account.

    In the pictures, Kyuhyun and Seohyun are singing while looking at each other. Seohyun slightly rested her head on Kyuhyun’s shoulder.

    The pictures drew a lot of attention and people are calling them “SeoKyu Couple”.

[NEWS/111025] Super Junior shared their feelings after ‘SM Town Live in New York’

Leaders of ‘Hallyu Wave‘, Super Junior, on October 23, for the first time perform at Madison Garden New York, where they received great response from American ELF. The whole arena was filled with Sapphire Blue color.

    Super Junior member shared their feelings and also acknowledge fans’ in their recent tweets. Leader Leeteuk tweeted, “New York!! It was a happy time. Thanks fans you made it happen.. Thank You again and I love you”

    After that Shindong tweeted with full of exhilaration, “Performance in New York, Though I have already performed at ‘Madison Square Garden’ but it feels unbelievable… ‘Me at this place!! Impossible’…. Every one who cheered for us Thank You alot”

    Lee Donghae tweeted in his own sweet way, he uploaded a picture holding flower bouquet and looks like offering to fans, he wrote, “ The only reason we can perform here at madison square garden is because of all of you. Thank u I <3 U”

    Kim Ryeowook wrote on his twitter, “After many efforts we performed well at New York, Thank You all……….so much”

[NEWS/111024] K-Pop Hits Madison Square Garden at SMTown Live

Fans storming hotel rooms or camping out at 4:00 a.m. for their general admission seats wasn’t enough indication, K-Pop officially hit New York City this weekend.

October 23 marked the first performance of an Asian pop group in Madison Square Garden with the SMTown Live ’10 World Tour. In previous years SMTown, a South Korean entertainment company, has put on the popular tour but never ventured to America. This New York stop follows successful shows in Los Angeles, Paris, Toyko, Shanghai and Seoul as part of the 2010/2011 run. That L.A. performance at The Staples Center was a sell-out landing the show at No. 9 Billboard’s Boxscore Grosses that week with 15,015 tickets sold.

The sold-out showcase brought out some of Korea’s biggest pop acts, including solo stars BoA and Kangta, girl groups Girls’ Generation, f(x), male groups SHINee, Super Junior, and male duo TVXQ.

If the massive roars of the sold-out show were any indication, everyone had a great time at the first — and most likely not last — major Korean pop show at Madison Square Garden.

[NEWS/111024] Super Junior’s Shindong and TVXQ’s Yunho turn up in New York City

October 23, Super Junior’s Shindong tweeted a photo with the comment: “I’m in New York now! I still cannot believe that I’m here. It’s absolutely worth a 14-hour long flight. I took a photo with Yunho.”

In the photo, Shindong and Yunho are wearing bright smiles on their faces, standing up on a skyscraper of dizzying height with the panorama ofNew Yorkas its setting. Dressed in a pair of unique sunglasses and glasses, they showed off their fashion senses suffering nothing by comparison with any New Yorker.

People who saw the photo left responses: “You guys look so excited.” “I envy you.” “The overlooking sight makes me dizzy.” “Yunho’s sunglasses suit my taste.” “Today, you’re New Yorkers.”

On October 22, TVXQ attended the New York Korea Festival held in New Jersey to mark the 20th anniversary of Korea’s joining the UN.
